Function/Duties of Position

This level 2 coding position offers assistance to the Enterprise Coding Department for coding of doctor’s costs and/or facility charges. This position needs experience in coding and needs accreditation with AAPC or AHIMA.

  • For Specialist Services coding positions: This position is accountable for examining medical documents and applying the proper coding and modifiers to evaluation and management services and non-surgical procedural services like EGD, ERCP, Endoscopy and Colonoscopy and so on. This position guarantees that the documentation supports the levels or types of service billed, guarantees the documentation remains in compliance with Medicare/Medicaid billing policies, and provider paperwork standards, CPT paperwork and CMS coding standards.
  • For Center Provider coding positions: This position is responsible for evaluating documents of outpatient diagnostic and secondary services for diagnostic radiology, pathology, and other ancillary facility services at OHSU. This position provides assistance to the Business Coding Department for abstracting of records, coding, and charge router submission of Center services rendered at OHSU.
  • Accountable for meeting performance standards set for accurate and timely submission of charges and coding for professional and facility services rendered at OHSU.
  • Operating in cooperation with Enterprise Coding Leadership and billing departments, offer technical proficiency concerning a broad series of 3rd party payer and compensation problems.
  • Orient peer coders or new hires to specified coding projects.
  • Needs keeping a per hour efficiency standard and quality standards as set by Enterprise Coding and based upon Industry Standards.
  • Will require attendance of Business Coding and Medical Department meetings through teleconference and WebEx.
  • Coding Work Queue task will differ based on organization needs or management assignment.

Required Certifications

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • Minimum two years of medical facility or professional services (dependent on position) experience examining, abstracting, and coding medical records using ICD-10- CM and CPT coding.
  • Certification in one of the following (as suggested by the position description):
  • Coding certification from AAPC or AHIMA: Registered Health Details Administrator (RHIA), Registered Health Details Specialist (RHIT), Licensed Coding Professional (CCS) through the American Health Info Management Association (AHIMA).
  • Active AHIMA membership might be needed for some positions. Qualified Professional Coder (CPC) through the American Academy of Professional Coders;-LRB-
  • OR comparable certification.
  • Should have the ability to perform the vital functions of the position with or without lodging.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Accredited Coding Program needed: AAPC Boot Camp, AHIMA Coding Boot Camp.
  • Knowledge of OPPS standards and both CPT Inpatient, Outpatient and scope coding guidelines. CCI edits and familiarity with medical requirement guidelines, NCD and LCD requirements
  • Experience using an EMR.
  • Some college course work or education in classes related to anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, CPT and ICD-10- CM coding.
  • Experience using IMPRESSIVE, 3M encoder
  • Knowledge of CPT, ICD-10- CM, HCPCS, Federal Register, Federal and State insurance billing laws and Requireds. Efficiency with data processing and Excel spreadsheets.
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication abilities with the ability to successfully communicate with people at all levels, doctors, nurses, administrative management, etc.
  • Capability to work as a team gamer.
  • Member of the American Academy of Expert Coders and Certified Expert Coder or AHIMA certification needed upon hire.
  • Needs to be able to pass internal coding test.
