Epstein, Louis M. The Jewish Marriage Contract: A Study in the Status of the Female in Jewish Law. New York: Jewish Doctrinal Academy,1927 xvii, 316 pp. Reprint offered December, 2004 by The Lawbook Exchange, Ltd. 1-58477-464 -9. Cloth. $85 A cogent and engaging evaluation of the history and significance of the Jewish marital relationship contract, the Ketubah, with substantial notes in Hebrew and English. As Epstein notes in the beginning, the Ketubah uses an excellent intro to the character of Jewish marriage since it is not an emotional, rhetorical or subjective text. Rather, it is “a legal document embodying the necessary points concurred upon by the celebrations and approved by the law regarding the manner of their living together as couple”[2] This work will interest those worried about home rights, family, divorce, and the development of betrothal and marital relationship.
