Medical Coding BHAT System Technique Update April 2018

Coach Laureen: OK. This next slide is we simply want to let you know that the Bubble, Emphasize & Annotate Method, otherwise called BHAT system, has been upgraded for2018 This was more agonizing than most likely giving birth.

As a number of you most likely understand, we used to use a document video camera and show our CPT handbooks on video. The AMA does not like any person to do that, so that they feel is an offense of their copyright. So, we needed to try and create a creative method to share how we annotate our handbooks so that our trainees, our club members can make their manuals similar to ours.

We had a lot of subject matter experts go in and produce practically like simply a document that walks you through. Far the feedback we’re getting is pretty good since it’s easier to follow due to the fact that they can print it out and have it next to your CPT manual and just follow the notes.
Coach Alicia: It was very time taking in to produce which’s what the hold-up was done.

Coach Laureen: It was a substantial, big group effort. The good news is now that we have actually got the format we need to be able to the end of this year be able to go in and rapidly make tweaks, change a page number here.

It just began off with CPT, you circling the parent code with the indented codes and any parenthetical notes and that became your bubble. You simply did that in pencil. And then I taught my students to highlight whatever after the semicolon, so that it was very clear when they’re looking an indented code that highlighted portion changed the highlighted portion in the parent code above.
As I taught the course, we would talk about each page of CPT and we would compare one grouping, one bubble to another and we would talk about it, what’s the difference, and then we ‘d highlight or highlight– I call it highlight what the distinction was in between the bubbles. So, on the certification examinations or in real-life coding you could quickly see what the differences were. So, that’s actually the method.

You truthfully, you really do not need these little walkthroughs, if you will. If you go and simply do it yourself and go through and ask yourself what’s the difference in between this and that in any group. So if you remain in the excision category and integumentary or musculoskeletal, just take a look at the difference between the bubbles. Something’s going to stand out as being different. Emphasize that.

And of course, we simply began jotting a little note here or there to help bring the standards forward that might have been 2 or 3 pages previously. So there isn’t like a lot. Some individuals say, “Oh they’re cheater notes.” No. There’s no notes really from another source. It’s basically all right there in CPT. We just shifted around, so it’s extremely visual from when you’re doing your coding work or your accreditation examination.

The BHAT system instruction is consisted of in all of our courses, in our Blitzes. Is it consisted of in all our Blitzes? I believe most of them.

Coach Alicia: Yeah.

Coach Laureen: And our club members. So, we do not offer it independently. It belongs to our program. So, if you want to discover more about it, if you go to www.cco.us/bhat, you can inspect that out.
