March 2, 2021– A majority of moms and dads of teens and preteens state they plan to immunize their kids against COVID-19 within a year of the shots being licensed for usage in kids. However moms and dads of younger age were less particular about their vaccination plans.

Moms and dads also expressed frustrating support for vaccinating instructors. Seventy-seven percent said instructors ought to be qualified for COVID vaccines right now.

Those findings come from a new survey of more than 1,000 U.S. WebMD readers who have children under the age of 16 living at home.

Amongst parents with children between the ages of 12 and 16:

  • 53%said they would have their children vaccinated within a year of a shot being authorized.
  • 24%stated they didn’t understand what they would do.
  • 18%said they absolutely would not get their teens inoculated against COVID.

Those percentages moved somewhat amongst moms and dads of more youthful kids.

Amongst parents with kids between the ages of 5 and 12:

  • 47%said they ‘d have their children immunized versus COVID within a year.
  • 26%said they didn’t understand what they would do.
  • 22%said they would not consider it for their kids.

Amongst parents with kids under the age of 5:

  • Simply 41%said they ‘d have their kids immunized versus COVID within a year.
  • 27%were undecided.
  • 22%said they would not get their young children vaccinated.

Among those who stated they would not get their children immunized, nearly three-quarters said the research studies are being hurried, and almost 60%said they were worried about safety and side effects of the vaccines in kids.

There’s “not enough long term info about this brand-new type of vaccine,” one reader responded. “I don’t trust it,” said another.

Research studies checking the COVID vaccines in kids are now underway. Anthony Fauci, MD, director of the National Institutes of Allergic Reaction and Infectious Illness, has actually said that if the vaccines prove to be safe and reliable, children might be eligible for vaccination as early as September.

Though children do not seem to be the main motorists of COVID spread, contact tracing studies reveal they can and do contaminate others.

A small portion of kids, especially those with health conditions, can become extremely ill with COVID. Even those with mild infections are at risk for a severe post-viral problem called MIS-C, for multisystem inflammatory syndrome-children.

” Even though kids rarely end up being seriously ill with COVID, they still need to be part of a vaccination strategy,” states John Whyte, MD, primary medical officer of WebMD.

More than 60%of moms and dads who haven’t been immunized said they ‘d get the vaccine for themselves within a year of becoming eligible for it. About 20%said they would not get the vaccine, while 10%stated they felt unsure about it.

Specialists believe that immunizing a high percentage of our population, someplace in between 66%and 80%, will keep the infection from spreading so quickly from individual to individual, efficiently ending the pandemic That high level of immunity is described as community defense or herd resistance

A survey performed in October and November of 2020 from the Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, of 18,000 mothers and pregnant ladies worldwide, found that the majority of would vaccinate their kids. Overall, 52%of pregnant females and 73%of non-pregnant women said they would get such a vaccine, and 69%of all ladies surveyed stated they would immunize their kids. Those numbers varied significantly by nation. Vaccine acceptance by moms on their own and their children was greatest in India, the Philippines, and Latin America; it was lowest in the U.S. and Russia.
