The Outpatient Coding Apprentice is an entry level coding position in the OP Coding Department. The purpose of this position is to provide an introduction into the Outpatient coding experience and the applicable guidelines for an

individual who is currently enrolled in an accredited CAHIIM program pursuing a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT credential) or have graduated in the last five years with an RHIA or RHIT credential. This individual is expected to learn and apply coding concepts, guidelines, and other necessary skills to successfully code OP encounters including being well versed in ICD-10-CM, PCS, and CPT coding. Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to: learning the Epic medical record, and understanding the documentation requirements to code from , practical use with an encoder, beginning to code simple outpatient encounters and resolving applicable claim edits , and preparing to take on more complex types of outpatient coding. This individual will be given guidance and educational opportunities to develop a career in OP facility coding as an Outpatient Coder .

Responsibilities

  • 1. Growth and Development – Coding apprentices are expected to progress through various outpatient coding types within their first year, including a comprehensive understanding of the medical record and documentation requirements for service line coding. It is expected they will master coding basics within their first few months and be fully proficient in a complex service line by the completion of their first year.
  • 2. Coding Expectations – Coders are expected to perform coding functions within departmental guidelines. Departmental guidelines include productivity expectations, goals, accurate use of coding statuses, work queues, stop bills and communication and relationship building with colleagues and partner departments.
  • 3. Coding Quality – Coders are expected to maintain a minimum quality score of 95% in in all aspects of their coding including diagnosis codes, procedure codes, etc. Coders are evaluated by both, internal audits and third party external audits.
  • 4. Exhibits enthusiasm for the profession, embraces educational opportunities and department support offered and remains engaged in the goals and vision of the department. Participates and seeks out career development activities by reading journals, coding articles, regularly attending department educational opportunities, and actively participates in any learning circles and /or group projects. Mentors and collaborates with peers to help support consistency of overall work product, and efficiency of workflows.

Qualifications

EDUCATION

Current enrollment and in their second year of an accredited Registered Health Information Technician Program or degree with valid RHIA or RHIT credential obtained within the last five years .

EXPERIENCE

No previous coding experience required, but helpful. Individual should have a thorough understanding of coding and the revenue cycle from educational program. Clinical experience of any kind helpful.

LICENSURE

RHIA or RHIT required with the exception of those enrolled in an RHIT program. CCS or CCS-P coding credentials preferred.

SPECIAL SKILLS

Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and disease process acquired in educational program requirements. Good oral and written communication skills. Ability to exercise good judgment, independent logic , light typing, and excellent computer data entry skills. Computer system experience including familiarity with encoder systems is helpful.
