According to Rosalind Picard, if we desire computer systems to be truly intelligent and to communicate naturally with us, we need to offer computer systems the ability to acknowledge, understand, even to have and express emotions. The current scientific findings show that feelings play an essential role in choice making, understanding, learning, and more– that is, they affect the very systems of reasonable thinking. Not only excessive, however too little feeling can hinder choice making. According to Rosalind Picard, if we desire computers to be genuinely smart and to connect naturally with us, we must give computers the ability to recognize, understand, even to have and express feelings. Part 1 of this book supplies the intellectual structure for affective computing. It consists of background on human emotions, requirements for emotionally smart computer systems, applications of affective computing, and ethical and social questions raised by the technology. Part 2 goes over the style and construction of affective computers. Although this material is more technical than that in Part 1, the author has kept it less technical than typical clinical publications in order to make it accessible to newbies.
