The concern gets asked a lot can I just do an independent study to become a medical coder without having to go to a trade school? The answer is yes! AHIMA (The American Health Info Management Association) allows for independent study to sit for the CCA (Licensed Coding Associate) credential. This is the entry level credential and is REALLY worthwhile. The following is a list of books you will require to study on your own to end up being a medical coder:
ICD-10- CM Expert for Physicians (existing year) (made by Optum360 coding) www.optum360 coding.com.
CPT Current Procedural Terms SPECIALIST edition (current year) made by the AMA.
HCPCS (existing year).
PCS (this is for inpatient coding) (existing year).
CCA practice examination book.
Examination and Management workbook.
diagnosis coding workbook.
Treatment coding workbook.
medical dictionary.
medical terminology.
medical abbreviations.
anatomy.
physiology.
pathophysiology.
pharmacology.
medical law.
medical principles.
medical insurance and billing.
HIPAA.
Privacy.
Fundamental computer skills (word, stand out, powerpoint).
Check out the guidelines! Deal with establishing your speed with searching for codes in the book. You only have 2 hours to take the CCA!
Reserve time to study each and every day. Start with the basics initially, medical terms, anatomy, pathophysiology, pharmacology. Medical law, principles, HIPAA, Personal privacy, medical insurance coverage and billing. Then fundamental computer system abilities. The start dealing with searching for medical diagnoses, then treatments, the examination and management. Look on the AHIMA website www.ahima.org for their recommended list of books to study for the CCA. Its on the website!!
