Jared Bernstein, a member of President Biden’s Council of Economic Advisers, claimed Sunday that Americans “actually couldn’t care less” about what process legislators use to pass another round of COVID-19 relief legislation, as long as it is passed.

” Look, the American people really could not care less about budget plan procedure, whether it’s regular order, bipartisanship, whether it’s filibuster, whether it’s reconciliation,” Bernstein told Fox News Sunday.

People “need relief and they need it now,” he included.

Some Democrats, including the Senate Spending plan Committee’s brand-new chairman, Senator Bernie Sanders (I., Vt.), have actually suggested that Democrats can pass President Joe Biden’s $1.9 trillion bill using spending plan reconciliation, enabling them to pass the costs as part of taxing and spending policies with a simple majority, avoiding a Republican filibuster.

” If Republican politicians are willing to deal with us to attend to that crisis, welcome– let’s do it,” Sanders said recently. “However what we can not do is wait weeks and weeks and months to move forward. We have actually got to act now.”

10 Republican senators on Sunday proposed their own structure for a COVID-19 relief bundle, contacting Biden to work together with them in preparing a smaller, more targeted $600 billion package.

The lawmakers, consisting of Senators Susan Collins (R., Maine), Lisa Murkowski (R., Alaska), Mitt Romney (R., Utah) and Rob Portman (R., Ohio), sent out a letter to Biden saying they “welcome the chance to work with (him) in a bipartisan way to fight the Covid-19 virus and provide continued assistance to households struggling during the pandemic.”

Bernstein said that the president is “ready to negotiate” with Republicans however that relief needs to be passed as quickly as possible to avoid an additional surge in unemployment.

” If we don’t get this package as developed out the door quickly, we risk having 4 million less jobs at the end of this year,” he stated, mentioning Moody’s, including that failure to move rapidly would “risk taking a year longer to get to full employment.”

However, Republicans have actually voiced concern that utilizing reconciliation would set an unsafe precedent.

Portman, in talking about the GOP members’ proposal on CNN on Sunday, stated he thinks it is “not in the interest of the Democratic party” to use reconciliation, since “it will set President Biden down a path of partisanship that will toxin the well for other bipartisanship we’ll need on numerous issues.”
