Position Summary:
May supervise the daily operation of the HIM Department Trainee Coding Staff. Orient, train, and develop staff to meet proficient competency levels, productivity levels, and quality expectations. Plan, organize, design, implement, and monitor coding initiatives to improve coding quality and reimbursement. Establish and maintain effective communication and collaboration with UNM Medical Group coding staff to coordinate coding quality across the UNM Health Sciences system. Promote correct coding guidelines and coding initiatives, medical record automation, and standardization throughout the enterprise. Ensure adherence to Hospitals and department policies and procedures. No patient care assignment.
Related Education and Experience may be substituted for one another on a year for year basis.
Accountability:
- PLANS â Develop and maintain curriculum for training coders and clinical documentation specialists. Coordinate development and maintain curriculum for provider and clinical staff documentation and coding training
- EDUCATION â Provide individual and group education to coding staff, CDIS, physicians and others throughout the organization who require coding and documentation knowledge. Training to include ICD, CPT, HCPCS, IPPS, OPPS, APC, DRG and other relevant state and federal laws and regulations
- QUALITY â Assist Coding & CDI Management staff to develop coding & CDI audit schedule. Assist in performing quality audits on coding and CDI staff. Develop and provide individualized training based on audit findings
- PLANS â Develop and maintain curriculum for training coders, clinical documentation improvement specialists, providers and clinical staff
- QUALITY â Assist Compliance Office to address educational opportunities identified through ongoing compliance audits
- SUPERVISION â Monitor certification, education, and competency requirements for Coding and CDI staff
- CUSTOMER RELATIONS â Serve as a Liaison with local and state Educational Institutions. Coordinate student internships
- SUPERVISION – Develop efficient organizational structure, supervise employees – select, terminate, train, educate, correct deficiencies, perform appraisals, issue discipline, counsel, schedule work assignments; encourage staff teamwork and growth initiatives
Education Requirements:
- Bachelor’s Degree in related discipline
Experience Requirements:
- 1 year directly related experience
Licensure/Certification Requirements:
- One of the following:
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC)
Experience Requirements – Preferred:
- 2 years directly related experience
Physical Demands Requirements:
- Sedentary Work: Exerting up to 10 pounds of force occasionally (Occasionally: activity or condition exists up to 1/3 of the time) and/or a negligible amount of force frequently (Frequently: activity or condition exists from 1/3 to 2/3 of the time) to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time, but may involve walking or standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
Licensure/Certification Requirements – Preferred:
