Do I need the newest medical coding books to pass the AAPC, Certified Professional Coder Exam? The answer is no. It’s not required to have current year codebooks on exam day. That being said, if you can afford the $250-$350, go for it. Unfortunately, the number one reason potential coders never make it to the title of certified professional coder is the cost of training and books prevents them from pursuing the career they want. Revisions are made every year and widely available online. If a student were to purchase the previous year books, she could get all three new used for under $60.
