After the production we asked her to take a seat with us and talk a bit more about beginning a career in the growing field of medical coding, medical billing and medical auditing.
Profession Recommendations for Medical Coding and Medical Billing.
Boyd: What type of career advice do you have for people who are looking medical coding and medical billing, as a profession? There’s a great deal of options today. You get asked this concern a lot. What kind of guidance do you provide individuals?
Laureen: Generally I will have somebody reach out to me and say, “I have an interest in medical billing and coding but I’m not really sure how to get started. Do I do the health center coding, do I do the doctor coding, do I do billing?” They’re a bit lost however they kind of acknowledge that they’re interested in that field.
Even if they desire to get into billing, coding is a part of billing and it’s truly, I think, essential to understand it. It helps you learn about all the various organ systems and things that you’ll be coding for.
Since truly medical coders are translators. They’re equating the medical file, as far as what sickness or illness the client has and what procedures were done to treat it and sometimes even how things occurred, like accidents and things like that and then materials.
Maybe you like diagnostics coding … Like Alicia Scott, our educational director, she likes diagnostics coding. I enjoy CPC coding, she simply likes it.
Diagnostic coders love the brand-new HCC coding. If that’s something you enjoy, it makes sense to do that.
The Growing Field of Medical Auditing.
If you enjoy E&M coding, which is like the office visits and things like that, becoming an auditor is actually an excellent profession choice. A great deal of individuals we get who already have some healthcare background, we get a great deal of nurses, we encourage them to think about auditing since they already have that medical understanding, so it makes it simpler for them to examine.
Auditing is just double-checking and making sure what is being coded is precise. Individuals who get into auditing frequently times want to be their own specialist so they can be their own employer, they can have their own little organization.
I am delighted to be able to provide somebody a career field that doesn’t currently require college education. We’ve had some people discover it in 3 months and they completely, they were like a truck driver, a guy really did this, we were astonished that a person can discover it in 3 months.
