St. Croix Regional Medical Center is currently seeking a 1.0 FTE (80 hours bi-weekly) Coding Educator position. This position is based out of St. Croix Falls, WI and will be required to work on site as well as travel to the other SCRMC clinics.
The Coding Educator is responsible for partnering with providers and clinic operations staff to support St. Croix Regional Medical Center’s Revenue Cycle Department. The Coding Educator is responsible for understanding and optimizing the Revenue Cycle and clinical workflows. Education will be provided to providers on diagnosis and procedural coding as well as documentation requirements, in accordance with correct coding initiative guidelines and regulatory requirements. Travel is required to all remote clinics.
Education & Licensure:
- Graduate of a certified coding program or Health Information Technology/Management Program (RHIT/RHIA) or equivalent work experience, required.
- Certification through AAPC or AHIMA, required.
Experience:
- 3-5 years E&M coding/auditing experience in primary and specialty coding, required
- 2 years of experience in a group education setting with provider audiences, required
- Epic experience, required
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
- Thorough understanding of ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure coding principals
- Thorough understanding of CPT and HCPCS coding principals
- Knowledge of revenue codes and filling requirements
- Knowledge of documentation requirements for compliant coding
- Demonstrated ability in critical thinking, self-initiative, and self-direction
- Ability to present information in one-on-one and group settings
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills that include communications with medical staff and other professionals
- PC, keyboard and basic computer skills
Essential Duties/Responsibilities:
Audit documentation and coding of clinic visits daily
- Evaluate the proper assignment of procedure, modifier and diagnosis codes to professional services to validate accuracy and compliance.
- Follow correct coding initiative guidelines and adheres to regulations governing correct coding.
Educate providers and clinical staff on correct coding initiatives and documentation requirements.
- Will provide, at a minimum, monthly education on provider coding and documentation trends.
- Interact with providers in various settings (one-on-one, group, etc.) to optimize and improve provider documentation.
- Collate, transfer and analyze auditing results to capture and illustrate risk issues, revenue leakage and educational opportunities.
Serve as a resource for providers, clinical staff and Revenue Cycle staff relative to technical guidance on professional coding and billing issues.
- Understand the impact of clinical workflows on Revenue Cycle functions.
- Review of each provider’s individual charting tools and preference lists to ensure accurate coding.
- Understand charting tools within Excellian (i.e. order entry, smart sets), and the dropping of charges.
Identify issues and implement process improvements for charge accuracy.
- Will identify when additional information is necessary and will ask for clarification and provide his/her research on the issue.
- Stay current with coding changes and provide reputable resources for the reason for change.
Provide quality customer service and communication to all departments, providers, coworkers and all other entities where there is interaction.
- Communication and customer service are delivered in a respectful and professional manner, when sending emails or in person
- Demonstrate the ability to deal with a variety of people, situations and handle conflict professionally
- Demonstrates the ability to deal with pressure, meet deadlines and be adaptable in changing situations
Minor Responsibilities
- Maintains patient confidentiality and protection of health information security
- Adhere to all policies, procedures and practice guidelines, promoting teamwork with all members of the health care team, and continue to seek opportunities for improving processes and workflows
- Act as a mentor/coach to newly hired coding staff on appropriate coding guidelines and make suggestions for necessary educational opportunities
- Answers all questions a coder may ask, in a respectful and professional manner
- Contributes to the Coding Department team goals
